About Scatter Joy

One of today’s leading and most respected designers, Kathy Davis recalls how the concept of Scatter Joy came about: “As my work developed over the years and my business grew, people I worked with started asking about my ‘brand.’ I was surprised to learn that I even had a brand, and I certainly didn’t know how to describe to people what it was. But I realized that I needed to be able to describe what I was trying to do if others were to relate and understand. In some companies, this summary of purpose is called a slogan or a mission statement, but I came to think of it as a promise – a brand promise. Scatter Joy has been my mantra – and my brand promise – since that moment. “I can’t take the credit for the phrase ‘scatter joy’. These two words are excerpted from a longer quotation that I came across many years ago while working on a poster design. The quote, from Ralph Waldo Emerson, had a powerful effect on me the moment I read it: ‘There is no beautifier of complexion, or form, or behavior, like the wish to scatter joy and not pain around us.’ The simple phrase ‘scatter joy’ truly explains what I hope to do with my art. The joy I get from creating is something that I want, in turn, to share with others. And the fact that – whether through a greeting card, book or some other product – these people may, in turn, pass on some of that joy to others inspires me even more! “Once I adopted ‘Scatter Joy’ as my personal and professional motto, my goal became to ‘scatter joy’ in three different ways – through art, through living and through giving. For me, scattering joy begins with art, but you certainly don’t need to be an artist to join this movement. In fact, I hope this website and my book, Scatter Joy, help you find your own personal way of scattering joy and that you find it as rewarding as I find mine. Paying close attention to those things that bring us joy is critical to creating a life that we love. Whether it’s making things, hiking, studying or working with people … if it feeds our soul, gives us energy, transports us out of time and into a space of flow … we are meant to do more of these things. “These gifts help make us the unique individuals we are. These gifts energize us, nurture us and move us to a place where the fullness of our joy spills over to others. I wish I could banish the guilt most of us feel over spending time doing the things we enjoy! Whatever form of art you are carrying in your heart, I encourage you to honor it, nurture it and remember to share it with others.”
